Cognitive behavioural therapy improves psychotic symptoms at 18 months in people with schizophrenia.

Patients: 309 people, admitted for the first or second time, presenting with schizophrenia, schizophreniform disorder, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder, or psychosis (DSMIV criteria). Participants had psychotic symptoms, not caused by substance misuse, for .4 weeks and scored 4 or more on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). People detained in hospital under the Mental Health Act 1983 were excluded.
